quigonejinn: (anakin - lonely now lonely future)

Setting aside the nitpicking over the phrasing/Jedi theology, oh how my Q/O tragedy-loving heart thumps at this section from the Phantom Menace novelization's Naboo water caverns scene:
Qui-Gon understood [Obi-Wan's] attachment and shared it. Obi-Wan was the son he would nevr have. He was the future he would leave behind when he died. His hopes for Obi-Wan were enormous, but he did not always share his student's beliefs.

"Be patient with me, Obi-Wan," he replied softly.
I should like to note that, during this bit, Jar-Jar is actually piloting the ship. Obi-Wan has just lost an internal battle not to ask Qui-Gon keep on "dragging these pathetic life forms along with us when they are of so little use," and he is sorta blushing from Qui-Gon's reprimand when he does, and he is kneeling next to Qui-Gon in that tiny little back of the craft.

*wibbles* Oh, blushing and kneeling and attachment! Guh.

You know, when I read through that book originally I kept getting stuck on the word 'son' and couldn't process any of it. Because I was all...son? Is that what they're calling it these days? So I missed beautiful little bits like this. Thanks for posting it.

That is Brooks's way of attempting to explain away the DEEP AND INSANE LOVE between the two and how he can't write three sentences of Obi-Wan POV without slipping something in about how much OBI-WAN LURRRRRVES MASTUH.

I'm watching Kinsey now on the side, and it is stabbing me through the heart with pain and love alternately and <3333333333 oh, how I love you, Star Wars fandom. The delights you lead me to.

I'm pretty sure that a part of Obi-Wan's mind is just taken up with a repeating refrain of QUI-GON QUI-GON QUI-GON.

I haven't seen Kinsey yet! Have you seen Batman Begins? I had such rabid Star Wars bunnies spring up when watching it, because of Liam's character.

No! No, I haven't, although I hear that I really should since I have this massive, unreasoning crush on the characters that he tends to do these days. It's on my Netflix queue for when it comes out. Oh, Ducard. <333333333333

Somebody mentione dto me that Kinsey is something to watch if you have trouble writing Qui-Gon in bed/in romantic relationships, and I can see how it's true. The character is sort of like Qui-Gon in a lot of ways, and oh, this scene I am watching where Kinsey and his wife are arguing about social convention! How Kinsey is all about truth and teaching, and how there is this SCENE where he's like :/ but it's social convention :/ conventions are bad and his wife is like :// sometimes, conventions are there to keep us from hurting each other.

Sorry about the, um, random spurt of Kinsey-love. I'm just, uh, slow with getting onto movies?

Like you're talking about with Kinsey, Ducard is perfect for exploring certain aspects of Qui-Gon that are hard to pin down otherwise. I so badly wanted to throw Obi-Wan in there and see what would happen. It's like, that's how Qui-Gon could be/have been, if certain things happened differently.

Augh, I have to see Kinsey, clearly. Have you read many of the EU books (like Jedi Apprentice)?

I haven't read many of the newer Jedi Apprentice books, so I only know of the Tahl stuff by relation, but I did read 1-10 and OMG. Yes. As my rampant, undying obsession with the little triangle of relatoinships between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Xanatos suggests, I really, really, really love them. Little ragey Padawan Obi-Wan! Smooth, strangely sympathetic Xanatos! Bitter Bruck!

And ohhhh, at the heart of it, Qui-Gon. With his deep messed-upness. <3

Outside of JA, I've read mostly comics. Most Star Wars Ongoing, some Star Wars Tales, etc.

Kinsey is pretty awesome, man. You get a potential view of Qui-Gon as the social radical that you don't get to see much, and there are these moments scattered throughout the movie where you get to see Neeson make his character EXPLODE. He ROARS and unleashes the temper that I imagine Qui-Gon has to keep under tight leash, and it's a fic-inspiring sight to see.

What is Ducard like? *is, by the way, completely nonchalant about being spoiled, enjoys being spoiled for movies*

batman spoilers!

I haven't read them all yet. I've read up to 9 in sequence and then a few others, but I've recently gotten my hands on 16, which is about Tahl. The Tahl stuff is...well, it does interesting and really profound things to Qui-Gon and the whole Qui/Obi dynamic. Tahl gets ignored in some parts of the fandom because she's seen as a threat to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and I don't think that's the case at all. I keep meaning to do a sort-of-meta post on it.

There's this one Qui-Gon bit in maybe the first or second book that I heart like mad; when Obi-Wan wakes up and Qui-Gon has his hand on his forehead, and then steps back immediately...och. <333

I must see it. That sounds awesome. The last time I saw TPM I was actually surprised at how much Qui-Gon yells or gets cranky. It was great.

I was totally trying to avoid spoiling you for Batman! :D But since you ask... Well, he misleads Bruce (and us). He's all 'I'm mysterious and philosophical and refined!', in this tailored suit and careful words, and then he gets Bruce up in this amazing eastern/Tibetan monk temple and BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF HIM. It was this really surprising, really sharp kind of violence, and Ducard was all dominant and unruffled. Because it was a lesson. And he acts throughout the movie guided by what he believes is the greater good (even if it's: 'this man is a murderer. Kill him.') He's spiritual, he's clever, and he believes in a life of service and doing what needs to be done, but he's not one of the good guys. If Qui-Gon had followed in Dooku's footsteps, this is what he would look like. He even has mysterious past!angst.

You have to see Kinsey just to see a well-written scene of three people figuring out how to have a three-way relationship. A slasher friend and I saw it in the theather, and spent the entire time giggling our heads off.
