quigonejinn: (anakin - lonely now lonely future)

Setting aside the nitpicking over the phrasing/Jedi theology, oh how my Q/O tragedy-loving heart thumps at this section from the Phantom Menace novelization's Naboo water caverns scene:
Qui-Gon understood [Obi-Wan's] attachment and shared it. Obi-Wan was the son he would nevr have. He was the future he would leave behind when he died. His hopes for Obi-Wan were enormous, but he did not always share his student's beliefs.

"Be patient with me, Obi-Wan," he replied softly.
I should like to note that, during this bit, Jar-Jar is actually piloting the ship. Obi-Wan has just lost an internal battle not to ask Qui-Gon keep on "dragging these pathetic life forms along with us when they are of so little use," and he is sorta blushing from Qui-Gon's reprimand when he does, and he is kneeling next to Qui-Gon in that tiny little back of the craft.

I haven't read them all yet. I've read up to 9 in sequence and then a few others, but I've recently gotten my hands on 16, which is about Tahl. The Tahl stuff is...well, it does interesting and really profound things to Qui-Gon and the whole Qui/Obi dynamic. Tahl gets ignored in some parts of the fandom because she's seen as a threat to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and I don't think that's the case at all. I keep meaning to do a sort-of-meta post on it.

There's this one Qui-Gon bit in maybe the first or second book that I heart like mad; when Obi-Wan wakes up and Qui-Gon has his hand on his forehead, and then steps back immediately...och. <333

there are these moments scattered throughout the movie where you get to see Neeson make his character EXPLODE. He ROARS and unleashes the temper that I imagine Qui-Gon has to keep under tight leash, and it's a fic-inspiring sight to see.

I must see it. That sounds awesome. The last time I saw TPM I was actually surprised at how much Qui-Gon yells or gets cranky. It was great.

I was totally trying to avoid spoiling you for Batman! :D But since you ask... Well, he misleads Bruce (and us). He's all 'I'm mysterious and philosophical and refined!', in this tailored suit and careful words, and then he gets Bruce up in this amazing eastern/Tibetan monk temple and BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF HIM. It was this really surprising, really sharp kind of violence, and Ducard was all dominant and unruffled. Because it was a lesson. And he acts throughout the movie guided by what he believes is the greater good (even if it's: 'this man is a murderer. Kill him.') He's spiritual, he's clever, and he believes in a life of service and doing what needs to be done, but he's not one of the good guys. If Qui-Gon had followed in Dooku's footsteps, this is what he would look like. He even has mysterious past!angst.
