Sep. 18th, 2006 12:58 pmYou know how people say "oh, I don't usually like original female characters, but I loved ____" or "oh, I usually don't like Kennedy, but I loved ____"?
This is one of those rulebreakers for me. Usually, I'm not a fan of first time fic, nor am I, as a rule, a fan of AHHH I LIKE COCK WHAT AM I GOING TO DO stuff. As far as I'm concerned, Forester pretty much got pre-Atropos HH/WB right in one when he wrote the Kingston chapters of Lieutenant Hornblower, but man oh man, how can any sane book Hornblower fan resist this fic of
billytaylor's?
It's sweet and thoughtful and funny and surprising. It's beautifully paced, smoothly executed, and oh, how I love her Bush. I love her Hornblower. This is better, dammit, than those fics that take a cliche and make it work in a new way -- this is the kind of fic that explains why why we fell in love with them in the first place.
