Anakin was neat for a nine year old, but he was not particularly neat for a nine year old Jedi. He was, after all, used to accumulating personal possessions. He had a room to himeslf on Tatooine, Obi-Wan had learned, and was a great enthusiast of accumulating endless varieties of small things that could be tucke dinto a pocket and forgotten or dropped into a corner and left.
Consequently, in the evenings, if Obi-Wan had neglected to keep on Anakin about it during the day, he would find that he had some cleaning to he retired for the night. Droid parts. Small handtools. Training clothes. The fast-learning tapes that he was using to get Anakin up to the literacy and knowledge levels of nine year old initiates, let alone other nine year old Padawans.
One night, while Anakin was cleaning his teeth and preparing to go to bedd, Obi-Wan found a composition tablet, and he called Anakin out of the 'fresher.
Obi-Wan had been kneeling on the floor -- the tablet had been left on the floor -- and he remained kneeling as Anakin came out. Situated like this, they were almost eye-to-eye, and Anakin's hair was damp at the fringes, and he was actually dripping behind the ears. Obi-Wan had learned that Anakin took a great deal of pleasure in playing with water, and when he saw the damp hair and the water, he made a mental note to check the 'fresher floor for puddles before bed.
Now, though, the situation at hand.
"Padawan, do you remember the rule about attachment? About family?"
The look of curiosity shifted into something like fear, worry, and Anakin flicked a look at the composition tablet in Obi-Wan's hand. "The droids are teaching me how to write. I thought -- "
Anakin stopped and regrouped. Swallowed. "Master Qui-Gon said that I might not see my mother again. He didn't say that I wouldn't allowed to write or send a message."
There was a little bit of petulance in the voice, and Obi-Wan let the words hang in the air until they could both hear it. Obi-Wan kept his expression fairly neutral, but eventually, Anakin bit his lip and bowed his head. His shoulders curled over into the posture that Obi-Wan had learned was result of trying to hold back tears.
After a moment of letting Anakin struggle with himself, Obi-Wan reached over and touched Anakin's shoulder. He made Anakin look at him, and he said, in his gentlest tone, "You may sleep in bed with me tonight, Padawan, but you must not write any more letters. You cannot even think of doing anything like that."

Date: 2005-10-15 07:48 pm (UTC)It does make sense when one thinks about it, why the Council didn't want to train Anakin, since he was too old. He had already formed attachments to people like his mother and Padme and Qui-Gon, and also to things, such as droid parts or handtools. Really, the Council should have long ago set up a school or schools on different worlds where those strong in the Force but wouldn't make good Jedi, like Anakin, could be trained, but still be a part of their society.
And Anakin kept making attachments to others like Obi-Wan and Palpatine, and also latter to things like R2 (as if one could think of droids as things, but I suspect there were many in the Republic/the Empire who did so) and his Jedi starship. One gathers from fanon at least that he spend a lot of time tinkering with droids and starships even as he grew up in the Temple, something we first saw in TPM.
