I'm rewatching Rome these days, and boy oh boy. Hinds is the perfect Julius Caesar. I don't give a fuck that the real one is supposed to be bald or shorter. I don't care. He's perfect. And Pirkis is the perfect mix of brilliance and threat and canniness and fuzzy blond baby chick as wee Octavian.

Once upon a time, back when she cared about me, I nagged babel into making Star Wars icons for me so that I would be more into the fandom. And she made this one for me, and as far as I'm concerned, it's going to be the default icon on this LJ forever. It's about Qui-Gon; it's from one of my favorite scenes in The Phantom Menace; it references Jedi doctrine; it suggests how Jedi aren't all they're cracked up to be, and <333333333333 It's all about diving into the new and unknown and figuring stuff out.

It's especially :| for me because of how the faces of the figures are blank -- looked at that way, the icon isn't really particularly about Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. The new trilogy is about the fall of the Jedi of the Old Republic, and this picture symbolizes something wonderful and good and strong that gets broken. Sure, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan might have been a wonderful team together; we see that in the first movie, but Qui-Gon dies at the end of the first movie. And after that, it's Obi-Wan and Anakin, Anakin replacing his master with Padme, Dooku striking out on his own, the Chancellor making the Jedi his puppets, with Palpatine and Darth Vader at the end showing just complete perversion of the Master - Padawan relationship.

Maybe it should be the one where Kennedy is yelling at Bush, but I feel like saying this is the icon that comes closest to open violence -- I mean, look at Bush. Is there any doubt that he would mess you up so bad that your own mother wouldn't recognize you if you made his boyfriend cry?

I have a completely irrational love for this icon. I love that little secret-smile PMG-Bush does, and I love the way he's tucking his hat against his chest in this screenshot. It's like holding his uniform close gives him joy and pleasure, and ahaha. I also just love the scene, too -- it's from the credits bit in Duty, where HH is trying to get ready for marriage. <3

No, I say. This might look like it's an icon from Kingdom of Heaven, one of those movies in which Liam makes a 5 minute apeparance followed by tragic death, but it's actually from this fic. Ridley Scott made that entire damn movie just so I could fall in love with/write an entire fucking fic about Liam Neeson with his hair cut short and the snow falling around him and looking so wise and sad and slightly amused. <3. They are in the forest, and Obi-Wan is looking at Qui-Gon, and we're seeing Mastuh through his eyes. <3.

I wish there were a deep, reasoned principle behind why this is my favorite icon, but I'm pretty shallow. It's atmospheric; it's got Ioan Gruffudd looking pretty like a girl, and I just love how he's all soft and pretty, but there's that element of calucluation there. He's thinking and plotting and the little baby middie is going to grow up and be a crazy captain. *tickles him*

I love this meme! And I love that you have A default icon, like that's the icon for this journal full stop. I really like what you said about the saddest icon, I think that's very true. Qui-Gon was the old guard, in a way, and Obi-Wan was the transition.

I think my favourite of this lot is actually the 'sexiest icon' with Bush and Hammond. It's got such a great feel to it and we can't see their eyes at all, but there's all that space and sea out behind them.

In a way, that's what fascinates me about them. They meet in the Long Rooms, and Bush will nod and drink champagne and hover in the background kind of pervishly while Hammod interacts with Hornblower. Then, they're on the Hotspur, and that "space and sea" transforms everything. Bush is the complete opposite of what he is in the Long rooms, and because of ship hierarchy, he acts as a barrier between Hammond and Hornblower. It's fascinating.

A friend of mine was watching Loyalty for the first time the other day. She was coming to them from the books, and she told me that she was scared witless by how cold Bush was with Hammond. Man. Movie Bush might not be the big bastard that Book Bush is, but Paul McGann can nevertheless be seriously menacing.
