XDDD I could talk about this kind of shit ALL DAY LONG, my friend. I've sorted major league baseball teams out by house. babel and I just did it for a bunch of the major DS9 people. Categorizing and judging people? :D :D On the list of preferred Rhod pursuits, it's a little below "reading porn" and somewhat above "blowing money on luxury goods."
I'd dispute the characterization of Slytherin as evil, I think. Sure, I think that they're set up to be hte fall guys early on in the series, but one of the fascinating parts of the later books has been seeing just how complicated it all is. The Weasleys are kissing cousins with the Blacks; Sirius probably wasn't the total outlier we've been set up to think he is. Draco Malfoy probably has a soul; Snape definitely has one. No house has a monopoly on evil, I think.
Also. There's a lot of black, tarry stuff in Hornblower's heart, I think. Even late on in the books -- like in Lord Hornblower, where he calmly blows the brains out of that one guy while he's swimming, and the stuff in BtQ about rape and murder. HThe biggest connection that I'd seen between him and Riddle and Snape is that deep, dark self-loathing. Hornblower is a lot more honest about it in the books than they are, of course. And he never quite manifests the EEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL that Riddle does, but I think he's got a world in common with Snape.
