Jesus, yeah? Because HH is so completely and utterly Slytherin to me. I'd never even considered him being anything else because he's so, so, so competitive -- how badly he doesn't want to be shabbier than the other captains, for example, and how rageful he is about the aristocracy. He feels strongly about those things not because he fundamentally has objections to the aristocracy or to fancy dress, but because on the wrong side of the hat-tipping.
And yeah, he likes reading and dreams about a settled life (the cottage with lots and lots of books), but his nature won't let him rest. Even when he has Barbara and the manor and money to buy every book ever, when he has everything that he'd want out of life if he were a Ravenclaw, he wants to go back to sea. He wants the physical experience of sea more than an intellectual life in London in that Bond Street townhouse. His favorite book is a popular blockbuster about how to keep your empire in the face of pussy Christians, after all. XD
To me, ultimately, Hornblower's underlying drive is for power and winning. It dies down when he's a bit older and there isn't quite so much to reach after/ambition has been BURNED OUT OF HIM BY CAUDEBEC AND THE DEATH OF MARIE, but.
