A neat little framing device for that story, by the way, would be to set it up in terms of Bush comparing Wellard, Hammond, and the midshipman that Hornblower must have been.
I was thinking that when I read that poem I posted -- the 'you remind me of the dead' or whatever. And how BOTH Wellard and Hammond die, and how that reflects on Hornblower: how good he is, but also, how vulnerable (in a different way to what we were talking about before).
