You know, I wonder what the inside-canon-logic for Bush training Hammond to be the signal midshipman. Why? Why him out of allll the middies? :>
Bush built up a relationship with both Wellard and Hammond; I'd love to see inside his head regarding what he felt about their deaths.
It's got to be. And, you know, a tough and hardass and Navy as Bush may be, I really think that he has to have a strong memory of Wellard. He's the one who's talking to Wellard about the sextant when Sawyer shows up and throws that spectacular shitfit, and he's the one who's standing up on deck while Wellard is being beaten and can't bear to look down belowdecks. And then, when they're mutinying and Wellard comes down to warn them, Bush is the one who jumps out and puts his hands on Wellard, so yeah.
It'd be interesting to write a fic where the back of Bush's mind makes the connection, but he can't quite make the connection until Hornblower asks him about it.
And yeah. :D This fandom is so virgin and wide-open compared to SW, in a way. Nothing's been done before! Ever!
