The best case scenario, I think, is that he toughens up eventually and kind of follows the Live Kennedy Development plan. I mean, Hammond doesn't seem dumb, just skittery and very young and sheltered compared to all the people around him. Most middies, I'd imagine, who aren't brilliant like Hornblower would go through something like that.
Man. Hammond also really looks like Wellard, doesn't he? I wonder whether Bush and Hornblower ever think of that.
