See, I wonder what if Hammond had actually lived through that whole fiasco, and gotten confidence from it? He's lacking the brilliance and internal drive, but he also cares hugely about his character and not disappointing people and not failing, which is why he wanted a second crack at it. And Orrock is like super sailor, a dependable sort of officer who knows exactly the difference between a head and a halliard, or whatever.
