I saw your suggestion of the Jedi being an abbey, yeah, and I think Yoda gets to be.
The idea, as it's shaping up now, is that Qui-Gon actually owes service to /holds his lands from the story-version of Valorum. It's a play on the idea of the Senate being responsible for supporting the Jedi, but I'm still fiddling out the details of the oath system.
