It might be interesting to look at it, too, from the angle that Archie sees what Bush has and has a gut reaction of being glad that he's NOT with Hornblower. That he has his own ship, little and small as it is, that he's not subject to Hornblower's moods, that he's his own master. And the guilt this causes because Hornblower is not only his dear friend, but because he can see what Hornblower is turning into. You know.

And the faint, tugging notion that Hornblower would be different if he was Hornblower's lieutenant, and Archie's own love of his ship notwithstanding.
It could go fascinatingly either way, really. Though :D :D :D I can totally imagine the relieved smile on his face when he staggers out of the examination chamber. So sweet. <333
