If Archie is a standin for Bush, the whole LIFE-SAVING SPANISH OMGZZZ bit suddenly makes a lot more sense. Because, really, the little boat of love? Kind of vital to the group escape. Archie's command of Spanish? Less so and has to be read as a sign of Hornblower's rampaging guilt.
