I love both versions myself, but I don't see them as being all that different just because I really believe that book Horatio gets less credit than he should because of the unreliable narrator problem. I see his numerous faults and issues, but he can't be even close to the bastard he thinks he is, or else everbody else in the series - who uniformly love and admire him - must have very bad judgement of his character.
