Like I've said before, Obi-Wan has no mercy in him. He truly can't understand how people buckle and fail under suffering, because he's always toughed it out.

I wonder (given his 'certain point of view' ideas) if perhaps he saw killing Vader as a compassionate measure?

Hmm... that's a good thought. Especially when combined with the 'more machine than man' line; given how uncomfortable Obi-Wan was with piloting and droids, he might have thought that a fate worse than death, especially when combined with the Dark side...
