Oh, wow, this is amazing. I like how, in a sense, so little has changed from the original—and yet everything has changed. Just that short scene in the Humvee signals that everything is different: Things that are slightly scandalous but perfectly acceptable from a man are the makings of silence and discomfort from a woman. The chemistry between Pepper and Tony is perfect—present, unacknowledged, awkward. And Tony's relationship with Obadiah is creepy, incredibly disturbing, and unfortunately believable. I loved the interaction between Tony and Jim—how Jim wants to do the right thing (in whatever situation) around her, doesn't really understand her, loves her. (I'm a little bit of a Tony/Rhodey shipper, so, there's that.) But, honestly, one of my favorite things was the very few lines about Yinsen—someone clearly very important to Tony, but someone that Tony keeps secret both from the people in her life and from the third-person narrator. I could read an entire separate fic about this Tony and Yinsen in the cave.
