Stronger (Harder, Better, Faster)

Tony Stark set to Kanye West and Daft Punk
XVid, 35MB
The song is on my default playlist, and last week, in the throes of full-blown fandom crazy, I started obsessing about what a fantastic track this would make for an Iron Man vid. And then one of the DOOMTHREADS -- it is 4:30AM, and I am too brainfried to figure out where, even with Gmail's halfway decent search engine -- somebody mentioned wanting to see it. And uh. I was too tired to write tonight, so here! HAVE MY OBSESSION.

Started at 10PM or so of Friday night, finished around 4AM of Saturday morning. Not much in the way of movie-independent storytelling, which is probably why it came together so easily. It usually takes me about eight hours per minute, but I banged this together in way, way under that. Think more like a 5:20 recap of the movie than anything else.

I STILL WANT THAT T-SHIRT

I tried to catch the scene today but missed it. And then an usher came and sat at the end of my empty row. Hmmm ...

about Tony trying to figure out what the names of those kids in the HumVee with him were because he feels like he ought to apologize to their parents or something

Oh, now you're makin' me sad. Because he totally would want to do that, and he totally wouldn't ask Pepper. Because (on so many levels).

And I was thinking today while watching that after Rhodey dumped him so spectacularly in the hangar, Tony craves attention so much that he would never bring that scene up and just go on like nothing had happened. ('Course, in the workshop he had a sum total of about one thing on his mind, but still.)

Yinsen is really like the father Tony never had - one that actually tried to teach him how to be an adult.

Yes! There's a scene where Tony just looks over at him, and you can see it. So when Tony had to walk away after Yinsen died, it was like he left another big piece of his soul in that cave. Gut-wrenching, I say.

(FROM A BUNCH OF SCRAPS!!!!)

this should be, like, [livejournal.com profile] quigonejinn's vidding motto, or something. cause it made me chortle for quite some time. :-D

[nods fervently] Look at Tony's emotional reaction when Pepper "quit". No bluster or joking or act ... just honest reaction: anger and fear mixed with a dose of shutting down at the end (the old self-preservation kicking in because Tony so isn't use to honest emotion). I don't want to imagine how long he would have sat there or what he would have been like if she actually had walked out.
From: [identity profile] besyd.livejournal.com
I wonder what he would have made of the NO MORE WEAPONS move.

I think he would have quietly called him on the suit. Pointed out: weapon.

Dude...
You and [livejournal.com profile] dafnap's thread up there is AMAZING. You're both so spot on in your observations, and I am floored and thrilled at how you articulated your theories. Brilliant. I think you should start a movie review/dissection blog. It would rock. SO HARD.

I especially love the whole Game-face!Tony v. Kidnapped!Tony. You're so right.

This ties in with the whole beginnings of PTSD, because he can't actually concentrate on anything but the suit and the mission.

Oh! Huge puzzle piece slides into place for me.

Plus - back to the PTSD - he had to keep what he was doing secret from the Ten Rings for months.

And another! "I don't know who to trust ..." He didn't know who to trust after Afghanistan because the only person he had learned to trust in captivity was dead.

Thank you for those. I love potential PTSD angles, and yet I wasn't snagging those.
From: [identity profile] amonitrate.livejournal.com
Yeah, I'm all about the Tony Stark PTSD right now. Heh. Poor guy.

[drops to knees before you, bows, and chants I'm not worthy] Just. WOW! [is your fangirl]

Everything everyone has already said about the synching, but the one that jumped out at me the most (don't ask me why) was where Rhodey found him in the workshop, turns him over, and Tony reaches up and grabs his arm. Perfect timing for that beat! Perfect! (If this were on tape, I'd probably have broken it right there by now for having replayed and replayed and replayed.)

And haHA! The dedication at the end! Even if I am a newb to the group and still kinda on the fringe, it made me do a happy dance. I'm truly in love with my new friends. :^D

Now, can I ask what you use for vidding? It's something I've always wanted to do, and I've become totally obsessed with finally learning for this movie. (I have a lesson scheduled at the Apple store tomorrow, just to get my feet wet.)

Thank you, thank you for this!

Adobe Premiere Elements. I'm too stupid to figure out how to use the full, non-short bus version of Adobe Premiere, and Elements pretty much does everything I want it to do.

I export as DV-AVI, then encode to DivX with Easy Xvid. (I'm a PC user.)

And aha. Dude, I don't think this corner of IM fandom is well-established enough to have newbies and oldbies. I mean, my God, the movie only came out last month. >:0

DO NOT GET OVER IRON MAN. EVER.

making vids from goddamn CAM FOOTAGE (AND MAKING IT LOOK GOOD) (FROM A BUNCH OF SCRAPS!!!!) is so commendable i can't even express it

adlkfjld. AHAHA. Actually, making it from the cam helped out at a couple points -- in the scene where Obediah is leaning over Tony's shoulder with the paralysis doohickey, he's actually blabbering away, but since the cam version is so dark, you can't tell that his lips are moving. And it helps hide the blabbering in the scene where Obediah rolls up to the Ten Signs guy and is like, "'Sup, I'm gonna kill you now."

But yeah. Still. Recut when the DVD comes out, particularly for the scenes with Yinsen in the cave and the Christine Everhart in bed ones. And the one where the flags turn into Tony and you can see somebody's head moving around on the left. And the scenes that synch to when the suit's eyes light up because there're a pair of really bad failure-to-synchs riiiiiiight before the big moment.

Anyways. You didn't ask to hear baout my endless vid angst. Thanks so much for the gorgeous, gorgeous comment. (And the gorgeous artwork, too. That gorgeous Tony-and-Pepper manip you did back in the day was one of the first things I found when poking around after the movie, and I remember the HOLY FUCK THAT IS AMAZING impact. I've just been way too chicken and inarticulate to leave you anything about it)

GOD. When I started this vid, I was freaking out over how the eff to do the black Kate Moss bit -- Rhodey as Kate Moss? DDDDDD: -- but I think the Christine Everhart from the back bit works reasonably well.

And yeah. HBFS was my favorite Daft Punk song for years, and after finding the Kanye West remix of it, I basically listened to nothing else for a solid week. It was kind of obsessive. XD

AHAH. I think you mean [livejournal.com profile] amonitrate, but yes. She also has faaaaaaaaaabulous fic, and if you haven't seen them already, this defense of Iron Man generally and Pepper in particular are, I think, fandom must-reads.

God, I've been thinking about Yinsen-survives all morning.

re: the soldiers in the humvee

[livejournal.com profile] liviapenn just posted a fantastic Tony/Rhodey story that touches on a whole lot of what we were talking about: the soldiers in the humvee, Tony as the performance artist, etc.

Also?

IT IS SO GOOD.

So, um, there's that.

... aw, apparently I'm the only person not to get EATEN BY THE DOOM THREAD who actually saw this vid. completely devoid of reading comprehension, and also, threadfollowing. But It's fucking fantab. Even if I still do have to cover my eyes every time we get to the shot of Tony on the couch with Obadiah ripping his heart out; I had Kanye to get me through it.

AHAHAH. It's all Dafna(P), really, and kdjfalkdf.

I have had that fic in my head ALL MORNING. All morning. My current detail to obsessively go over and over and over in squealing glee: yes, Tony Fucking Stark will settle for wearing Armani if Strenesse is not available. Because when you're as rich and self-obsessed as Tony Fucking Stark, you don't wear Armani. Armani wears you. Murakami screens your face on one side of a YSL bag and La Lohan's face on the other and puts it in MOCA.

by the bye, [livejournal.com profile] quigonejinn, I finally got a chance to sit down and watch both this and Freedom Hangs and, WOW. I'm even less of a vidder than a ficcer but these are both really, really lovely. I confess to making a high-pitched noise in the middle of Freedom when it goes to banjo solo to the visual of Iron Man stalking away from his Gulmira tank explosion, because who knew banjo would fit the man so well?! Eeee, just, a SUBLIME moment. and word to whoever said that music really underscored the Americanness of Tony's story.

and of course, Kanye, with your precise and excellent editing choices, to a song that just works so well. Gah. I mean, I actually loved the not-sharp cam version because it made it all moody in a way I don't know a sharp image would have. It's obvious you poured a TON of work and love into both of them; I can't even imagine the energy you've poured into this fandom this week, but it's so wonderful. Thank you!
