I have to agree with the posters above about the structure, tone, the shifts in time, and yes, the absolutely wonderful crystal metaphor (wow, it seems like I'm cribbing my review, and for that, I apologize). Very nicely and subtly done, and the last bit in particular brought back the pain. XD
