I love that you worked to make this subversive of all the usual fanfic romance things.
I'm not sure if I agree with you about the ending. I think there's some valuable stuff there - for instance I love the idea of Hornblower coming and having these silent walks with her. I get the bits about Barbara and even the Bush/Hornblower thing being kind of fanservice-y and they could have been cut, and I approve of tight writing as a rule, so *shrug*.
