Freedom Hangs Like Heaven.

Iron Man set to Iron and Wine.
20MB, XviD or play in VLC

I'm going to end up recutting this when the DVD comes up because right now, there's this CERTAIN SCENE where SOME FUCKING DOUCHEBAG decides to HANG HIS FUCKING HAND off the side of the CAMERA and then some other asshole walks across andf;lkjgdf. I couldn't figure out a way to cut around it, so that scene sucks. And there's one bit where Rhodey is a talking head, but I figured that I've wasted a week of my life already on this.

So yes. Iron Man and Iron and Wine with Calexico production. And just ignore the fact that they use the wrong reign/reins on that Forbes cover. XD

I AM PRETTY MUCH IN LOVE WITH THIS YES.

Dude, the parts where you contrast the "freedom hangs like heaven" with the rockets activating before he was kidnapped, and then again with Tony in the suit at Gulmira trying to fix the damage left by that person he was before, and still can't quite completely change no matter how hard he tries.

That, and I LOVED how you paralleled Pepper and Yinsen in that last half, about the risk he's putting the people he cares about trying to fix a legacy that didn't have to be his in the first place, but that he was too complacent to change before he learned his lesson at a terrible price.

Aweeeeesome vid, but damn you for raising the bar so high :D

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
AHHAHA. WHAT, RHODEY'S GIANT TALKING HEAD AND THE RANDOM HAND THAT APPEARS AT AN EMOTIONAL CLIMAX DIDN'T PUT YOU OFF?

<3333 But really, thanks. I'm fascinated by how well the movie talks about how, no matter what Tony does, it's two steps forward, one point five steps back. And after making that vid, dear God, I want fic about Obediah and Daddy Stark. Possibly, totally fucked up Obediah/Daddy Stark.

Does it exist, or are me and Tony Stark and the Clone Babies alone on this?

[identity profile] obsession-inc.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Erm, let me first say HOLY WOW re: the vid (I have few ways to actually discuss it) but seriously, yes, Obadiah Stane and Howard Stark, YES. I had this in my head all day and it's snuck sideways into what I'm writing, which is kind of odd. But Obadiah just fascinates me. He seems to want Tony to be something else, and I can't help thinking that the "something else" is Howard Stark.

(Also I noticed that, having now moved the time line up to the present day yet again, if Daddy Stark helped defeat the Nazis and Tony was born in like 1971, there must've been a significant age difference between Howard and Maria. And Obadiah must've been ten or fifteen years younger than Howard. There's just so much to play with here.)

I AM SPAMMING YOU ABOUT IRON MAN SORRY

[identity profile] nolivingman.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
This is awesome. I can't be smart about my review of it like [livejournal.com profile] dafnap, but it's really pretty and makes me love poor asshole atoning Tony Stark. Man but I love him.

SOMEHOW I DO NOT MIND.

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
It is hard not to love him, really. Here, have a pretty, pretty photo of him atoning.

And you know. Since I'm obsessed with jobs, I'm fascinated by the idea of a fic exploring the the more-rational-than-crazy-crazy-love reasons why Pepper keeps on working for Tony. He pays very well! He's actually not that bad of a boss to work for! No wife or girlfriend with jealousy issues!

[identity profile] nolivingman.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
That picture OMG. I'm going to stare at it until I have to go to work.

Well, she has a lot of autonomy it seems like. And the networking is no doubt to die for. Everybody wants access to Tony and so they all owe her favors. Plus she can probably can use his jet(s) to go anywhere she wants.

[identity profile] gabby-silang.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
HOLY. Okay, several things.

1) Your incredible patience with making a vid (aka looking for hours upon hours at all that footage) from a CAM is just astounding. And I adore you for it. Because, weirdly, it kinda adds something to the feeling of the whole thing.

2) SONG CHOICE. So I've been listening to that one Wilco song that's all "you know I would die if I could come back new", and thinking about Tony (which I do anyway, but thinking about him ESPECIALLY during that song), but this is SUCH A BETTER IDEA. I love that line about newborns walking on water and wandering home, with Tony stumbling through the desert and his whole return. And, damn, how pretty everything looks to folky guitar music with robots flying all over the place.

3) EVERYTHING ELSE. For real, it's late, but I will probably watch this again a few times tomorrow and be back to rave some more. I love how much you've used those magazine photos, and the strategic coming back to the shot of Obidiah and Stark Sr., and, gah, it gives me chills, that picture next to Iron Monger doing his big nasty thing, and Tony, Tony, Tony and his sweet, young face, never realizing until the very end, frozen without a heart in his own home, helpless, that he was never in control at all, for all his playboy bravado.

Yay, this was so awesome.

Oh man. That cover of Forbes with Tony looking so desperately, desperately young and trying to be cool and tough while Obediah stands in the background, looking like the tough bulldog who'll fuck you up if you mess with the puppy? It breaks my heart. I mean, look at the way Tony stands with his shoulders back and the gray collar when you know that's not what he usually was like at 21, and it hints, so much, at the role Obediah had in his life. Tony tries so hard in his emotionally retarded way, and I mean, how fucked up is it that they tell his life's story with cover articles, photo shoots, and the front page of a newspaper?

There's all kinds of fic in it. There's all kinds of fic all over this movie. Tony thinks he can fix things alone, but he can't! He needs Yinsen and Pepper and Rhodey!

And yeah, in all truth, the cam version really helped with the pretty. I spent a lot of time cursing dudes who sat up or moved around, and some of the darker scenes are pretty much a loss, but MAN, it makes the desert look fuzzy and pretty. Obsession! Your name is Rhod!

Here via [livejournal.com profile] dafnap! And glad I am! :D

I wasn't familiar with the song, so I don't feel like I may have caught all the delicate context, but still -- WOW. Something about Iron and Wine plus the imagery you chose really serves to hammer in just how quintessentially American the Stark's story is, both in his (spectacular) achievements and (even more spectacular) failings.

The way you used (and reused) the newspaper was just brilliant, not to mention poignant. Also, question: is the subtle halo to the footage because it's from a cam DVD? Because I REALLY LIKE IT for this video. It meshes beautifully with the folksy music.

Such great work. <3

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahah. You missed nuthin'. I chopped about twenty seconds off the front end and about five off the back end because my feeble brain couldn't think of how to stretch the footage out anymore.

And yeah, the halo to the footage is all cam and the processing that the cammer did in order to eliminate angle problems. It's also why so much of the action footage is slightly blurry, but I'm almost willing to deal with the blurry action and the random dudes getting up and moving around and hanging their hands off for the way the halo reaaaaaaaaally focuses attention on Tony et al.

<3 Thanks for watching!

This was great-- I am not sure that I get the ending, exactly, but all the rest of it was just gorgeous. It's amazing how you managed to get IM to look so right with this style of music. :D

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not sure that I get the ending, exactly

XD Neither do I, now that I look at it after the heat of vidding has passed. I was trying to convey that while Tony does does have people that he can rely on and while he's outflying his past, it's still complicated -- hence, the shots of Yinsen, the shot of Pepper fixing Tony's suit, and the shot of Rhodey working in his professional capacity.

Calexico-produced Iron and Wine works well for just about everything, I think. XD And the cam-tastic footage helped, I think.

Here via dafnap, as I said, and your vid was very insightful. Lovely work, and I loved the song choice. It'll be downright stunning using DVD footage, even if it would be annoying to recut..

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ahah. Yeah, recutting is going to make me want to gnaw my fucking arm off, but it might be worth it. The halo around some of the scenes has grown on me, but maybe that's just my total dread of trying to find the exact goddamn frame, etc, etc. .

Anyways, thanks for watching it. And you are more than welcome to jump into the convo up above. It's more on temporary hold, I suspect, than actually ended.

[identity profile] besyd.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome vid. Even with the problems you described. Awesome. (Which means the final, DVD cut will rock beyond.)

I GO AWAY FOR ONE WEEKEND AND I MISS ALL THE GOOD STUFF. I can't even watch the vid yet due to, um, worky things, but I already KNOW it's kickass. Iron and Wine!!

on the up side to missing the party, I feel like you guys, like, got at least up to #83 on the List of Things That Need Ficcing. Way to go!

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I WAS HAVING TERRIBLE THOUGHTS THAT YOU STOPPED LOVING IRON MAN. I WAS POSITIVELY VERKLEMPT.

And then I realized that you were off having the most incredible time at a totally awesome music festival. *cheers*

Iron Man fandom: this is the party that never ends.

Beautiful vid, excellent all around and song choice. Thanks!

Glad you liked it. It's hard to make a bad vid to a song that awesome, I think. :D

[identity profile] mercurydraconix.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
okay, yes, I am confident every single person within Iron Man fandom has come to say that this? is AWESOME.

But I just wanted to let you know that I hadn't noticed the creepiness factor of the lyrics "freedom hangs like heaven over everyone" until I heard them in conjunction with looking up towards the Jericho missile, but now I can't forget.

so, thank you for this vid.

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was the thing that sealed the deal for me when I was giving trying footage out and seeing if I could make a go at it -- I'd totally forgotten that the Jericho's were from the Freedom Line. I mean, really, guys.

Thanks for the comment. :D And I hope you don't mind, but I just friended you after reading some of your lovely, lovely posts about living in Japan.

[identity profile] gottalovev.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
that was an AWESOME vid, I love the song choice and how you made it flow

I haven't finished reading all this stuff, but OMG you people are smart! And funny! and I like the way you think! So please tell me it's ok that I'm reading your comment conversation...

Since I've watched this vid like a bazillion times now, I figured I should tell you how much I loved it. Fantastic song choice, and you really used it to set a perfect off-kilter, slightly dangerous mood, which I thought worked really well to tease out the underlying themes of betrayal and redemption in the movie.
