Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] despatches,

Captain Stott, who had been a boatswain with Boscawen, was an excellent seaman, but unfortunately retained some habits not suited to his present rank. He kept a mistress on board. Among the midshipmen was a boy named Frank Cole, who was three years younger than Mr. Pellew, but had entered on board the Juno at the same time. Mr. Pellew was warmly attached to him. The woman had some pet fowls, which were allowed to fly about; and one day, when the ship was at Marseilles, and the captain absent, one of them was driven off the quarter-deck by young Cole, which led to great abuse from the woman, and a sharp reply from the boy. When the captain returned, he became so much enraged by her representations, that he not only reprimanded the youngster severely for what he termed his insolence, but so far forgot himself as to give him a blow. This was not to be borne, and having consulted his friend Pellew, he applied for his discharge. Captain Stott ordered a boat immediately, for the purpose, as he said, of turning him on shore. Pellew instantly went to the captain, and said, "If Frank Cole is to be turned out of the ship, I hope, sir, you will turn me out too." Their spirited conduct attracted the notice of the two lieutenants, Keppel and Lord Hugh Seymour, and laid the foundation of a friendship which continued through life: and Lord Hugh Seymour, finding that the boys had no money, very kindly gave them an order on his agent at Marseilles. Captain Stott afterwards tried to induce them to return, but not succeeding, he gave them the highest testimonials of their ability and desert, saying that he believed that they would become an honour to the service.

DEAD, my friends. DEAD WITH LOVE AND LAUGHTER.

It's such a fucking delightful read -- little midshipmen love! (hint hint, [livejournal.com profile] karabou) Colorful Pellews who had scandalous songs made of them!

Sure, it might all be propaganda, but I love Robert Lindsay, and I love pink nightcaps, and I'd love it even without pink nightcap and Robert LIndsay because it is bravery and adventure and saucy and scandal and <3333333333333333333333333 I don't even care that, as far as I can tell, there's no reference to Pellew's bastard son who became the second Exmouth. Issue resolved. No bastard son, alas, just shitty Wiki.

pet fowls?
massive, massive (&*@Y#GF@()U@!() on this one for the captain from the lower decks, woman on board and pet fowls!
"put the chicken back mr. cole"
i suppose only the captain's mistress could get away with an avian that wasn't going to be dinner.
"warmly attached" eh? hmmm....yes, warmly i imagine....
thanks for posting this wee treasure!

Oh my heart. Oh my heart oh my heart oh my heart.

*loves him so much*

Sorry I haven't been commenting on the comm, somehow it got tossed off my default view, I fixed that now.

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. I haven't been commenting that much either and -- I just found thi swhile digging through the Pellew family homepage.
There was much of the martinet in Edward Pellew as a young man. It was a family characteristic. His brother Israel was once put ashore by a mutinous crew, and his son Fleetwood goaded two ships into mutiny and was forced in consequence to leave the Service. In Edward the similar strictness was qualified by exceptional ability.
*is experiencing death by hilarity this afternon or something*

FWIW, the base story turns up in several sources, so it's probably right enough.

And also, DAMN funny. :)

Also, now I want to check that bastard thing again. I was reading a Cornwall church register of something the other day, and Bastard turns out of be a fairly common last name. Yeah, I'm all wtf there too.

holy fuck, i cannot handle html today.

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2006-03-08 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There are no words for the WTF about the whole thing. I mean, I just did a little more digging, and it turns out that other sources list the Pownoll birth date as 1786, not 1776 as Wiki had been, so it looks like he was legitimate and from the official Pellew homepage on the "Bastard":
* His actual legal name. The middle name was a tribute to a Mr. Bastard, who was present at his christening. The bowl of cheer must have been flowing."
*is in hysterics* This teaches me to jump to conclusions/rely on Wiki to much.

pet fowl ???!!!!

'warmly attached'???!!!

This is one of the greatest things I've read yet in the Age of Sail.

There are no words, my friend. No words. The whole fucking biog is full of excellence, really, and I just put in a request for the long-term library facility to ship me a copy of their C. Northcote Parkinson.

The best crack is always the stuff that's true. ^__^ OMG PELLEW LOVE. <33333 And midshipmen love too.

[identity profile] lamis-p.livejournal.com 2006-03-09 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Midshipman love is just so sweet it makes my heart all smiley - warmly attached - nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

i have, alas, no new mcgann to give you. *holds empty hands out*

[identity profile] quigonejinn.livejournal.com 2006-03-09 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
What's really fascinating is that Pellew apparently had to campaign pretty somewhat to get out to sea in the first place, and that part of the reasn, it seems, why he got bundled off was becaue he'd beaten the snot out of some kid at school. O.o Temper temper, Pellew.

You have already given too much!!

Pellew as a wee angry, midshipman loving boy with a pink nightcap and a megaphone! <33333
