Ohh it had to be written! And the way you've done it (especially the paragraph "It was strange awkward afterwards...") is just so Hornblower. You know, I started a story once where HH's job involves a little bit more than playing whist... and of course Pellew comes along and rescues (or he would have, if I hadn't abandoned the thing)... Well, I'm so glad you didn't abandon this!
