I was thinking of Possession by Byatt, a long, powerful narrative, in which modern academics research the lives of Victorian authors through their letters, notes, and works. They end up digging up a lot of forgotten secret that in turn affect their own lives. Good stuff. Or at least the book is, haven't watched the film.
