Quick scattershot answer on the queue as I'm heading down to the dockyards.

It's both -- older & more conservative held onto the queue. Horatio and Archie were (poor) costuming choices ESPECIALLY in the original movie.

The Army abandoned use of the wrapped queue before the Navy.

I have issues with fic that shows Bush wrapping his own queue. He wouldn't have. It's too difficult to do on your own and Bush with his neatness hardon wouldn't have a sloppy queue. The period term was having a "queue buddy". Could it GET any gayer?

I can tell you the actual process of wrapping if you want that sort of freaky detail, and I do have period woodcut of soldiers sitting in a line wrapping each other's .... er .... queues.
