There is that bit later in the books where he's very consciously manipulating his image so that his junior officers will like him, but yeah, I get the feeling that Horatio omits the bits where he genuinely is nice to people. And he exaggerates things a lot -- like all those times he imagines that Bush is scuttling away in pane and hurtz0r? Um, Horry. :D Perhaps you may not have noticed it, but Bush really isn't a fourteen year old girl who cries in her cot at night.
