It's hard when you come into fandom later and you're faced with over 3,000 stories on one archive alone. I started much earlier with in the first two months of the fandom and even then there were many, many stories to read.

I guess at this point, it is best to go by recommendations.

I think every large or aging fandom goes through cycles. I am so glad to see a new influx of writers with a different take on the relationship. I love that. It's very refreshing but I'm sorry that I'm not seeing them posted onto the MA list or archived on the MA archive (which is a separate entity).
