I would hazard a guess about Bush's accent that he is from a southern town (yeah, that narrows it down SO much), but not Liverpool.
I was thinking (after having watched Austen's Persuasion with my sister the other day) I don't know if his decision to join the Navy is covered in the books, but really the Navy was the only way to change your social situation. Captains, at least, garnered respect and a decent pay, and officers had the potential for capturing/sharing prizes. Given his situation of being a...commoner? and having to support his one million sisters and mother, that might be the reason why he chose it. It's also a good means of work that gets him out of society in general, and keeps him busy. Would he have quietly coveted the adventure? Maybe he wasn't interested in becoming a blacksmith, but had the opportunity to do so, i.e. he might have considered taking on his uncle's trade. Perhaps his father was in the Navy, too, and died young. OR, given that Wm. never speaks of him, it seems more likely he either never really knew his father or these was some associated disgrace/tragedy. OOH and is it the fact he has no money/obligations to his family that he doesn't gamble, or because he has something against gambling in general?
Also: Horatio, you are so very gay. O_o Meditating on someone's arse-fixation. What does he do for his morning exercise?
complete ramble
