HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO FIND THE ONE SPARK OF HOPE TO END IT ON, HOW, HOW

BECAUSE I WANT TO WRITE A LOT OF STEVE/NATASHA SAD UNDERCOVER MARRIED MISSIONS AFTER THIS. Just asdkfj. Clint on the other side of the line when Natasha and Steve call for their evening check-in, their easy silence while Steve walks over to the refrigerator, pops the secret compartment, and takes out the blood samples to scan through to the lab techs standing by, Natasha talking to Fury about the security perimeter she established and thinks is defensible if things go to shit. Her casually asking Steve to grab the topography map for her, and he gives it to her, and you can't quite hear her say thanks or his no problem, but you do hear the rustle of the paper and there is a second, just a second, a second of silence and Clint imagines all kinds of things.

The time when they're a couple minutes late for a designated call-in, and then Natasha dials in, and it's just her.

"Sorry," she says, dusting her hands off. "I was cutting his hair on the deck. He refuses to go to a real barber because he says he can't bring himself to pay more than thirty five cents for a hot shave and a cut, so he's upstairs showering and will be down in a second. In the meantime, let me fill you in about -- "

Clint cut her out of his heart after she left him to die on his face, but -- it was almost twenty years of his life, and unlike her, unlike Steve Rogers, he just has a normal, human lifespan. Twenty years means something to him, and listening to her talk in her cool voice, the sound of another voice in the background, deeper, her saying in a voice that is, say, 98% exactly the same as her regular voice but 2% different, "Stop that. You're dripping on the floor," and another half-second of silence that could be Steve kissing her on the cheek or her touching him on the bare shoulder or --

Clint is both glad and not-glad that they don't have enough bandwidth to do a video feed.
