Perhaps I'm just still too entrenched in HP fandom because when I read this I immediately thought imperious curse and then the outlines of an entire AU began to take shape. Fury is definitely as canny and secretive and manipulative as Dumbledore. Rogers, Banner and Stark are Gryffindors fighting the good fight for SHIELD, er, the Order. Steve was a Prefect, then Head Boy. Tony wasn’t . He spent more time in detention than anyone in his year, despite his considerable talents. Banner has always been the brightest and most studious, but whispers about his mysterious illness have kept him out of the limelight. And don’t get me started on Romanoff (Slytherin, master occlumens, spy turned double agent (hey, she’s got red in her ledger). Professor Fury has never hesitated to give her the toughest missions; despite her history, she has never given him a reason to doubt her loyalty. Today’s mission: capture and interrogate the dark wizard Loki. Neutralize Loki’s forces, including Barton, by any means necessary. She knows that even experienced aurors like Barton have great difficulty fighting the Imperious curse and are never quite the same after prolonged exposure to dark curses. Barton’s talents for concealment charms and long distance curses do not make him a likely candidate for capture. She does not flinch when he gives the orders, though her face grows paler. “Professor Fury,” she nods before turning to leave. Others might not notice the pain behind her masklike expression, but he does, after a lifetime of experience. At that moment he recalls little Natasha, dark and serious even at eleven, and wonders, not for the first time, if his students were sorted too soon. Can you make something out of this mess? Yeah, I’m sorry. Delete at will. -C
