RAMBLE = AWESOME

Yeah, this may be a matter of professional training.

Yeah, srsly. I joke that I'm destined to be a copyeditor (and/or reference librarian), so typos jump out at me and the closest I can come to correcting them myself is to point them out to the author.

I think I'd be more comfortable with a "the flow of your story is borked here, here, and here, and I think you totally effed the structure of the big scene" comment than something about typos, especially if the commenter is somebody that I know and have had interaction with. (Not that you were wondering but you now fall into that category since we've officially exchanged two (2) rounds of comments.) That's the stuff that really matters to me.

*does little dance at the parenthetical*

And yeah, that totally makes sense. Honestly? I'm kind of lazy, and typos are *easier* to point out/correct than broader stuff. -- I'm bad enough at making broad summary comments of praise, nevermind explaining how something big didn't work (especially if I feel like I should be offering a suggestion of how maybe it could be fixed). Kita will often thank/praise me for my thoughtful feedback, but I feel like mostly I'm just pointing to stuff that I really liked, 'cause that's easy. Example of what a lazy reader I am: I once quibbled with something in a fic Kita wrote, and while I wasn't entirely wrong, it turned out that I had made a foolish assumption about the timeline, and once I corrected my understanding the fic worked a lot better for me.

Interesting about correcting personal posts. I feel like generally people think of personal posts as more transient -- they show up on people's flists, people do or not read, they move off the flist -- whereas fics get bookmarked, recced, reread, del.icio.us'ed, etc.

As for Doomfic... it's definitely a solid piece, and it's mixed in along with "Dust Is Gonna Settle" and "Ambition and History" in the "Iron Man backstory I have to remind myself isn't actually canon"... but it didn't really move/resonate with me emotionally like "Dust Is Gonna Settle" and "Ambition and History."

And yeah, definitely when something fills a need it's gonna get attention, and I know I'm certainly more willing to praise/rec things that aren't quite up to my usual bar when there isn't anything else filling that need (whether it's hitting a particular kink of mine, fix-it fic, or whatever).

I dunno if "The Kids Aren't Alright" got self-advertised 'cause I read fic almost exclusively via recs, but I saw [livejournal.com profile] hackthis' rave rec of "The Kids Aren't Alright" and probably saw it recced elsewhere and del.icio.us says, "this url has been saved by 144 people."
