Yeah, it's an odd little point. I think the most convincing one I'v eheard that doesn't require inventing other events is that Obadiah kept waiting for Tony to get bored with Stark Industries and go off, as livia_penn put it in that one fic, fuck off to Ibiza to design underwear for supermodels. And over the course of the next fifteen years or so, Obadiah also comes to the realization that no, the only way Tony is going to be separated from SIA is when Obadiah pries it out of his cold, dead hands.
