The Red Room believes in ceremony and formalities. How long is the working life of an agent enhanced by their version of the Super Soldier Serum? Decades, at the very least, if other causes don't intervene. Red Room agents have none of the ordinary markers of birth and aging and family for them, so over time, they've figured out their own traditions.

One of the traditions is graduation.

Steve's graduation is -- .

The house is in the countryside. Bucky, at first, doesn't tell Steve where they're going, but hands Steve the fake passports they'll be using. Steve looks down at the picture of him in it, mouths a few words of Dutch to himself, and when they land in England, Bucky does all the driving. They go out to the country; they park in the back lane, hop over the wall around the garden, and let themselves in by the back door. In the downstairs study, they find an old woman, sitting in a chair. Her hair is white, and she sits very straight. Steve has a gun out; so does Bucky.

There is a long moment of silence, and Steve looks around the room, slowly: the lights are off, and the curtains are half-drawn. It's an overcast day in late spring. There are framed pictures of grandchildren. Multiple grandchildren.

There is there is a long moment, and then Peggy says, in a voice that has a great deal of anger in it, "Hello, Steve. Did Howard find you in the ice for the Red Room?"

Her face is hard; her shoulders are set.

There is a vase of fresh flowers from the garden on the table. A wedding portrait, old-fashioned, on the bookshelf by the window

"Hit her," Bucky says, conversationally, in Russian, but Peggy worked counter-intelligence for fifty years before retiring, and she has more than a handful of Russian. Steve sees her brace herself by gripping the arms of her chair, sees her try to sit even straighter, and he also sees the fear just before he hits her hard, in the face, with the hand holding the gun.
