Your main fandom of the year?
I wrote the most for X-Men First Class. Also, is hating the shit out of 2/3rds of Moffat's Sherlock Holmes/hating the fandom around that show a fandom? If it is, I'm in that fandom with bells and ribbons and a fresh-baked cranberry-nut cake.

(Dabbled in: ATLA, Temeraire-verse, The Eagle. Attempted to write in: Sherlock Holmes AGOS, Hanna, Sons of Anarchy)

Your favorite film watched this year?
We just got back from it, so I might be more key-smash about it now than I will be in the morning, but goddamn, guys, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is beautifully done. It's slow and beautiful and a spy movie in which exactly three guns go off, and it is STERLING.

Honorable Mention: How to Train Your Dragon, because it makes all the cold, scarred parts of my soul feel alive again. It's on my rainy-day-of-the-soul watching list, along with the first 75% of Totoro. (You don't want to see what May going missing does to me.)

Your favorite book read this year?
Non-fiction, probably this.

Fiction, probably this. That is the exact cover on the one I picked up in a second-hand shop.

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
The National's High Violet.

Your favorite TV show of the year?
SONS OF ANARCHY SONS OF ANARCHY SONS OF ANARCHY

Verra, verra close honorable mentions: Archer and Justified. Since when the fuck did FX become my main TV channel?

Your favorite LJ community of the year?
I've stopped watching comms.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Choosing to read "fandom" as a "online community of fans," rather than "new canon for things that I enjoy fannishly": It's a dead tie between X-Men: First Class and Sherlock. I'm disappointed with the first because of the usual fandom distaste for ladies who might get in the way of the main pairing, with an extra coleslaw serving of failing to realize that Charles Xavier is a huge dick in that movie, and Sherlock, for the fandom. Everything? Can we just say the fact that the show has any kind of devoted fandom at all after the second episode, let alone a huge and active one, makes me throw up in my brainpan every time I run into some on the wilds of the Interwebs?

I TOLD YOU. HATING ON SHERLOCK WAS PROBABLY ONE OF MY MAIN FANDOMS OF THE YEAR. I HEAR THERE IS A NEW SERIES STARTING SOON OR SOMETHING.

Choosing to read "fandom" as "new canon for things that I enjoy fannishly": Doctor Who led the pack, with Downton Abbey and Misfits following a few paces behind. I would've said Downton Abbey, but Doctor Who surged into the lead with that sexist crapfest of a Christmas special.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Chibs.

Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Lana from Archer.

On a more sane level: Mary from AGOS, who as we all know, is steampunk British Hunter!Pep.
On a definitely less sane level: ALICE FROM LUCIFER DOES IT COUNT FOR THIS YEAR IF I WATCHED THE SECOND SEASON OF LUCIFER, AND BY WATCHED, I MEAN "SKIPPED ALL THE PARTS WITH STUPID BODIES AND ONLY WATCHED THE PARTS WITH HER" SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORIARTY IN EVERY MODERN DAY REBOOT I'M SAYING. LOOK AT HER.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
The cataclysmic joy of watching Robert Downey Jr. on a tiny, tiny pony.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
Iron Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. You know Proust and madeleines and all that? I re-read doomthreads and get such a powerful wave of adrenaline -- dry mouth, dry hands -- that feels just like being up at 3 AM in the morning and vidding and powering through the sleep deprivation because OH MY GOD SO EXCITED WE JUST FIGURED OUT THAT MARIA INVENTED THE PARALYZER.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
By sheer power of will, can I force SOA to have a fandom? No?

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
AVENGERS. JUSTIFIED. ARCHER. MORE AVENGERS. JUSTIFIED. WATCHING THE REST OF THIS FANFUCKINGTASTIC SEASON OF BOARDWALK EMPIRE. ACTUALLY WRITING A GAME OF SHADOWS MARYFIC.

GOD YES on XM:FC. Xavier is such a dick and I don't know why nobody seems to see this, and Darwin is a Marvel fave of mine so seeing how the canon and the fandom treat him was just fjfjkfejlfejfjlf yeah.

Is Sherlock really that bad? I read something homophobic said by the guy who plays Sherlock and that made me cringe pretty hard (I'll probably never watch the show now) but I have like, zero familiarity with the show.

Yeah the quote was not egregiously homophobic, more like the sort of off the cuff comment that most people would probably find acceptable, like, oh, Sherlock definitely isn't gay, sure maybe he's campy, but he's way too tough and manly!

And speaking of Not Okay, holy shit, seriously? Isn't this supposed to be the modern adaptation? Not that a historical setting would make any of that more acceptable, but at least it might give an indication of what the hell they were thinking.

Would you recommend the second Holmes movie to somebody who did not care for the first one? I heard it was much better, but I also heard they killed Irene off violently, which sort of dismayed me.

I have to ask -- is it Sherlock that you don't like, or the Sherlock fans? I find it hard to believe that you really would like the RDJ Holmes movies better than Sherlock for any other reason than RDJ being hot. At least, assuming you have actually read all the original stories, which I think you have but correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I am going to have to rewatch them with this in mind, because I did see all three episodes but I don't really recall much of what you are talking about. I remember thinking the first episode was amazing, and the other two were not quite as good, but I still enjoyed them. I did think the circus was pretty ridiculous and that Watson's girlfriend was too much of a damsel in distress, but to be honest I have seldom seen any Western TV show handle anything involving Chinatown or Chinese organized crime in any way that doesn't involve bad accents and trinket shops. It's so common that I tend to be annoyed for a minute, then ignore it.

I completely fail to recall what you are talking about in the third episode. Do you mean where he tells the girl that her new boyfriend is gay and is just dating her to get to him? I read that more as Holmes's severe lack of tact and knowledge of social niceties.

On the other hand, as for the movies, I felt like they were fun action movies but pretty much made a mockery of Sherlock Holmes. RDJ plays the same character he plays in every other movie he is in -- the self-centered, womanizing, egotistical, simultaneously brilliant and enormously stupid ridiculous guy. Which he does brilliantly, but still. It's like you put Captain Jack Sparrow into Victorian England. I feel like the BBC series really kept he spirit of the books much more than the movies did, including Holmes's personality, his relationship with Watson, and the way he interacts with all he other characters. That is what I love about the books, and it seems to be missing in the movies. The movies are more about action chase sequences, RDJ sleazing on women (although at least the women are done well), and him somehow managing to make everything turn out okay despite being a bumbling idiot. That's not to say I didn't enjoy them, but still.

Though I'm not a fan of his Holmes, I'll have to disagree that RDJ plays that role in every movie. Or even very often. Pretty much as Tony Stark and Holmes and that's it. If anything he's been typecast as an insecure socially inept eccentric, he's played that in like, five or six movies I can think of offhand.

That's fair -- those are the only four of his movies I've seen (Holmes 1 & 2, Iron Man 1 & 2), so I am generalizing.

Also, FWIW I haven't looked at any fandom anything for any of them, but I tend to be annoyed at 90% of fandoms for being mostly made of OMG LOOKIT THE GAY SQUEEEEE anyway.

I have turned into a cranky old lady, apparently. I am now full of hate for all kinds of shipper squee.

That, my friend, is what happens when you get married. :P Kind of like how once you're an adult all the teen emo angst is super-annoying.
